I don't know of ANYONE who was calling for them to throw the rules out the
window and start acting like rabid animals.

I don't. Both boxers knew the risks and accepted them. Neither boxer
expected nor accepted the idea that part of their ear would be bitten off.

No it's not. They are wearing padded gloves and are expected to follow a
strict set of rules designed to protect their opponent. Yes, it's still
potentially dangerous, but they know that going in.
