Hi everyone,
I hope that the echo was renewed properly. I haven't seen anything come
across lately.
Anyway, I have been working with OpenDos (freeware release of Novell Dos
7 for those who haven't heard of it. It is available from
www.caldera.com.).
Anyway, I think I have it pretty well set up now. I have installed it
on a laptop, more precisely, a Compaq Contura 3/25c. It has been
interesting, trying to replace the MS product with this. I think I have
it pretty well configured now, with one exception. I can't reboot with
CTRL-ALT-DEL. This will lock up the system every time. Is there
something unique about Compaq laptops? So far, I haven't found anything
in the docs that would address this behavior.
Would I have to install some sort of keyboard driver in order for this
to work correctly? there were a couple of files in the old cpqdos
directory that I could copy into the opendos directory and add to the
config.sys, but I don't know about mixing MS-DOS and OpenDos files.
Other than this, Geoworks Ensemble seems to run very well with OpenDos.
I have tried to push things as much as possible to stress the system,
but it has been extremely reliable since I switched.
Other than this, I am waiting for upgrades for communications. I tried
Arachne, but other than getting it to run, I was not successful at
establishing a PPP connect with it. Now, I have no phone (until I
return to the States in 17 days). I get to carry the laptop to the
phone to send these messages and receive any replies. I did try
NetTamer, and was able to get a PPP connect with it. I didn't quite
care for the user interface though. Arachne would be much nicer if I
could get it to work. Perhaps when I am back in Arizona, and using
Primenet again, I will have more success.
TTYL,
Stephen
