It's true even today where I work (an hour north of New York City). Many
towns around here only have a volunteer fire department, a fact that blew
me away upon my arrival here, given the number of multi-million dollar
mansions that are relying on Uncle Joe to leave home and come to the rescue
if a fire starts. The response times must be awful.

On this topic a darkly amusing observation is the apparently non-trivial
correlation between rural arsonists and volunteer firefighters. Something
about wanting to be a hero I guess ..
