Well I think most of the volunteer fire departments now have at least some
connections to local government. I know where I grew up the volunteer fire
department was part of the local town even though most of the firefighters
were volunteers. In PA the local governments contributed money to the
volunteer fire departments but did not run them.

I found news stories on Volunteer firefighter arsonists to be interesting.
Disgusting but interesting.
