I've seen weird things in Max that pass with time or dir changes myself :-)
I did do a full minimal install to get the system up enough so I could access 
it remotely, and on another drive. I've since then move the EXE's and 
restored the CTL's (a Co-SysOp downloaded the various CTL files a few hours 
before the crash! :-), the problem persists only for remote callers, and now 
only in the one function.
It's got me stumped.
