I recently saw a "Boca" Internal 28.8 K bps Data/Fax Modem for as low as
$30 dollars after rebate. How ever it stipulated Minimum System
requirements: 486dx/33 processor, open 8-hint ISA slot, Windows 3.1 (MS
DOS 6.2), 4 mb ram, 5 mb hard disk space. Am I looking at a modem that
would run on my 8 mh 286At or 386dx 33mh as long as I did not use their
fax/data software and online software?. Is this a workable solution or
would this be a windows only modem and require the higher speed
processor and ram to be able to get the thru put as questioned above?
If I can not use it, then what would be an example of a modem
specification that I could probably use and with these slower system?
RC>ro> There is also some specifications that deal with error
correction RC>ro> and being able to recognize compressed data?
RC>All automatic, and handled by the modems themselves.
RC>ro> I would also like to know any thing you can provide me with on
RC>ro> the subject of faxing via computer. Does the modem have
RC>ro> anything to do with the faxing capability or is this all just
RC>ro> software that you buy and install on the computer? I see modems
RC>ro> listed as 2400 baud data and 9600 baud fax or something like
RC>ro> that? I also see them listed with voice mail and other things i
RC>ro> know nothing about but would possibly like to use.
RC>A modem that can handle faxes supports various "classes", the common
RC>ones being Class 1, Class 2, and Class 2.0. These last two are _not_
RC>the same. You just have to make sure that your fax software supports
RC>the same class as the modem - and just about all software supports
RC>Class 1.
Does the Class have anything to do with what the other system is using.
IE do both the sending and receiving system have to be operating on the
same Class I? In the example of Boca modem they furish the software. I
saw no Class mentioned in the ad as to the modem's class. Is this part
of the modems chip set programming? As the number goes up ie 2.0 does
the capability advance. Ie is 2.0 the most advanced one available? Is
there any way to tell on a used modem that is fax capable what class it
is and what kind of software will run on it other than writing the
manufacture?
I take it that the fax rate is different from the modems straight data
thru put rate? Do you know of any good Fax Shareware that I can try?
Super discussion on what I need to know Rick. I sure appreciate the
information and help on bring me up out of the DARK AGES! :*) Please
continue the discussion as you have time.
