You are talking about newbies here...

But more to the point there are no longer printers in the retail
marketplace outside of DOT matrix, that still sport drivers for anything
but 2k, XP and Vista.

Then some of the printservers you refer to also require proprietary
drivers, same problem.

Hardware mfrs are hesitant to support OS's no longer supported by its publisher.

Very true, but this perception is very much what alot of the non-power
users/newbies think.

But my comment was more to the point of using a old OS that is no longer
patched against the latest threats or which can run the latest security
software that can guard against that which threatens PC's today.
