Hello JOHN! 07 Sep 10 20:42, you wrote to 3ROSS CASSELL: RC>> I have had many come in having a working machine of that era, but RC>> needing to add a printer or replace one and not being able to RC>> find printers that work with no longer supported OSes and RC>> hardware... (Yes the Parallel Port is deprecated) JG> If that's the only reason they need to buy a new system, why not JG> sell JG> them a router that has a USB printer port or one of those netowkr JG> USB Hub devices? Kinda goes back to the profiet margine.... JG> Sales look better for a new system and printer than at most JG> a printer, router and network card.... You are talking about newbies here... But more to the point there are no longer printers in the retail marketplace outside of DOT matrix, that still sport drivers for anything but 2k, XP and Vista. Then some of the printservers you refer to also require proprietary drivers, same problem. Hardware mfrs are hesitant to support OS's no longer supported by its publisher. RC>> People shouldnt be using Win95-ME on the Internet anyway unless RC>> they are running said OS in a Virtual Machine. JG> Why's that? Has telnet.exe and ftp.exe changed that much since JG> then? JG> Has far.exe released a new version that doesn't work on JG> Windows'95? JG> Last I checked, Lynx and Sea Monkey ran on Windows'95..... JG> Oh yeah that's right, because if your on the internet the only JG> thing JG> you do is download pictures, videos, and music and play games.... JG> That's right... You can't use ftp, nntp, telnet on the internet JG> unless JG> you are stuck in the 70's.... It bugs me to no end how people JG> think JG> the web is the only part of "The internet" Very true, but this perception is very much what alot of the non-power users/newbies think. But my comment was more to the point of using a old OS that is no longer patched against the latest threats or which can run the latest security software that can guard against that which threatens PC's today. == Ross Fidonet Feeds Or Fidonet In Your Newsreader: http://www.easternstar.info E-mail: ross(at)cassell(dot)us | Blogs/Other Places: http://links.cassell.us --- GoldED+/LNX 1.1.5-b20060121* Origin: The Eastern Star - [Mail Hub] - Spartanburg, SC USA (1:123/500) SEEN-BY: 10/1 3 11/200 331 14/250 18/200 34/999 120/228 123/500 128/2 187 SEEN-BY: 140/1 222/2 226/0 236/150 249/303 250/306 261/20 38 100 1381 1404 SEEN-BY: 261/1406 1410 1418 266/1413 280/1027 320/119 396/45 633/104 260 267 SEEN-BY: 633/285 690/682 734 712/848 800/432 801/161 189 2222/700 2320/100 SEEN-BY: 5030/1256 @PATH: 123/500 261/38 633/260 267 |
