Don,
    I could tell when the birds have to poop...usually I'm holding them, and 
they tend to grasp my arm or finger a bit tighter, and then poop.  If they 
were on the floor, or flat surface, they would take a couple of steps 
backwards, and then poop, and move forward again....it's pretty easy to tell, 
if you just keep an eye on 'em .
