crowd.
Now, there is a campground at a place called Blue Lake just inside
Lassen county from the Modoc County line....the way you get to it is via
Likely were you turn East at the Likely General Store.....I am sure that
you can get directions there at the store or the bar just across the street.
Last I heard, the bar was run by a Susan Flournoy.....tht was a year
or so ago, but we were classmates in highschool, and I had one heck of a
crush on her since 6th grade......but that is all it added up to, a crush..
I was to wild and downright mean for her........always getting into fights
or trouble in high school..........my father was the math and science
eacher
at Modoc Union High School in Alturas from 1949 thru the spring of 1974.
nd
because of that, I had to proove that I was not a "Teacher's" pet....and
hat
got me into more trouble than I care to remember. I left there the day
fter
graduation and went up to Blue lake and stayed drunk with another trouble
maker and two girls from Susanville.......for two weeks. Then I went and
joined the Army, learned to jump out of Airplanes as a paratrooper, then
a year and a half of special forces training and then in late 1963, Vietnam.
It had to have been in December of 63, because I saw Kennedy get killed in
Dallas on my leave prior to shipping to Nam......I returned to the states
in 1965 to attend 1 semester at Shasta Jr. College and 3 years at Wisconsin
State University before I was shipped back to Nam....1969..I stayed there
nd
in Cambodia, Laos, N & S vietnam until long after the US pulled out of
Vietnam
as an advisor to the Montanyard tribes of the highlands of SE Asia,
tationed
officially in Bangkok and attached to the US Embassy, I have only been to
he
Embassy upon my arrival, I was Air lifted out of Laos directly to Germany
where I spent 2 1/2 years in a comma, and was discharged with 100%
isability
in July 1976.
My wife is from the Cho-lon District of Saigon in Vietnam and has
never
been in the snow....which you know hits the high Sierra's of E. CA pretty
heavy in the N. part of the state. Now we live in Kingman, Arizona where
we have lived since 1978.....as does my father and one sister. I have
a sister living in Redding, her name is Phylis Wells and her husband is a
boilermaker/machinist by the name of Don Wells. Phylis (we call her Lucy)
was just 4 months old when mother died.....you might look her up in the book
and tell her I sent you a message......if you wish.....or not!!
Well, that is the life story of this disgruntled old man who loves
to play on the computer. Write back sometime........oh, a wee bit of advise
to you and any of your friends you care to warn......you know that Hilary
bought Bill Clinton a new computer and got him a home page set up in the
Oval office of the Whitehouse......you knew that didn't you?? Well she did,
guess he was causing to much trouble while she was trying to run the country
so she had to put him to work doing something useful.....so he comes on TV
and beggs the American people to send him E-mail and tell him what they
thought about how he was doing.....RED FLAG....I had to do as my commander
in chief ordered, so I sent him E-mail like he asked......told him he really
messed up giving China MFN status without getting something from them first.
Also told him that he was really screwing up the educational system in
this country with this Homeschooling thing, and that I couldn't understand
how he became President after committing treason by not only dodging the
draft, but going to Moscow, Russia and protesting the American involvement
in Vietnam while Americans were dying there........I also told him that
as far as I was concerned, he should be tried for treason, and if found
guilty, he should be shot.......guess what....his reply was, Thank you
for your letter expressing your concerns.....then about 2 months later I
bet a visit from his SS (a throw back to the Gestapo under Hitler, he calls
his SS the Secret Service). When I told the agent I was only doing what my
commandar was ordering me to do (an officer in the United States is in the
military, subject to recall for life unless they resign their commission...
I still hold the rank of Major United States Army.....and even though I am
totally disabled, I am proud to have served my country when she was having
such a hard time of it.....not that I believe the war in Vietnam was right,
or just or any of that bullshit, but that this country was in the pits, and
needed all the help she could get from every citizen....and those that ran
off should never have been allowed to return when the trouble ended.....
Anyway, you want a really beautiful place to camp, try Blue Lake, it is on
US Forrest Service land, so no fees......and it is beautiful...unless it is
all commercialized now.....but you can call the General Store or bar in
Likely to learn about that and get directions.
Also, if you are into backpacking and a bit of flyfishing that is out of
this world, there is a mountain in Modoc County just E. of Cedarville that
is called Saddleback Mountain. It is two peaks with a high meadow
between them, elevation about 14,000 feet. In the saddle is a Lake called
Eagle Lake. It is in the wilderness area, so the only way in is to hike
about 10 miles......up on the way in, comming out is easy, all downhill.
You need warm clothes year round...a good sleeping bag and plenty of de-
hydrated foods, jerkey, powdered milk, coffee, a pan for cooking, plate and
knife and spoon for each camper, forks are optional, good hiking boots that
come high on the legs, warm socks....change them at least 3X per day to keep
from getting jungle rot or frostbite......and flyfishing gear. A 60 lb pack
plus a light tent you can spend a week in one of the most beautiful and
quietest spots on the face of the globe......and it isn't but 200 miles from
you....or there abouts.
