Man who assaulted MP pleads guilty

FREDERICTON - Terry Curtis pleaded guilty on Monday to assaulting MP Andy
Scott in his Fredericton constituency office. In exchange for guilty pleas
to assault causing bodily harm and uttering threats, the Crown dropped two
lesser charges of theft and mischief.

Curtis will remain in custody until he is sentenced, which is scheduled for
Jan. 6. He could face two years behind bars. Curtis's lawyer, Lisa Keenan,
says the 48-year-old Curtis, who underwent a 30-day psychiatric assessment
following the attack, is manic-depressive and might be slightly psychotic,
but with proper medication he could lead a productive life.

Curtis's wife has said the assault was inspired by the same-sex marriage
debate. Curtis is opposed.
