It depends largely on the room as well (and of course, your own ears and your 
ability to discern direction of sound -- some people probably couldn't 
locationalize 8kHz if they tried!).  In a very square, resonant room, good 
luck with any kind of directionality at any bass frequencies.  Outdoors, with 
sub cabinets placed a few hundred feet apart, it would probably become a bit 
easier to pick out directionality of an 80Hz signal :)
