At least you survived 2005.  ;)  I was offline for a while that year,
too, with a broken ankle... until hubby set up a way for me to use the
computer from the bed..  :)

I also always liked dialup... but the major difference for me between
telnet and dialup is that I don't hear the ring or the modem baudrate
handshake any more... once I'm on, it's just like when I used to dial up
to the BBS.  Never did packet radio... but I think I'd agree with you
there, if I did...  :)

I really couldn't imagine trying to be active in the messages without
the BlueWave Offline... even in today's much less active areas... I need
the time to figure out what I want to say... and can't always really
think, so packets pile up for a few days sometimes... like now...
