DS> I have recently started using Microsoft Office, including

I would check to see if there are any startup switches appended to the
inword
command line: Open the properties dialogue box for the Word6 icon (ALT+ENTER
in
Win311) tab down to the command line text box. For a straight vanilla Word
startup, the command line should be "C:\WINWORD\WINWORD.EXE" (drive and
directory may be different for you).
There are a plethora of switches which can be added to WINWORD command to
control the way in which is starts, eg the "/N" switch causes word to start
without an open document.
