All that's below just from the teaser, wow. I hope that you enjoy the stor= y.

>The Nebula Class obsolete? That sounds awfully quick for a stablemate
of the Galaxy class.

Note that these were just rumours by the senior officers on the way back to
Earth (with their side trip to Tiberius). The Dominion War has ended, and
= during
the war, there were a number of advances in starship technology. Older shi= ps
might be obsolete in terms of their technology, but could still have useful=
 roles
to play. Although the Galaxy-class was still around, I think by this time t= he
torch of "top class in the fleet" had moved on to the
Sovereign-class ships= .

>The Akira as a science vessel? Where did you read that? All the
descriptions I have seen have a More militaristic type of ship..

Probably nowhere. Perhaps I should've thought more, but I needed another c= lass
to go along with the Intrepid. I just got to thinking (and the Pioneer 10
= story too)
about a new class, the Nebula-style varient of the Sovereign-class, the Pio= neer-
class ship. That could be the new main science ship out there.

>Starfleet polarizing into military and science missions? With no place
left for a multi role cruiser? EEK!

Multi-role cruisers could still be out there, but the idea of the split was=
 to take
the Athena and ships like it out of situations where conflict is more likel= y. This
allows the Athena to be assigned exploration missions to visit strange new
worlds, and less likely to be called to diplomatic or more military-style
m= issions,
although they do get some of the former. As for the "obsolete
technology" part, I don't think it's too much of a spoiler to say that
the Athena gets = some
of those new toys, which easily extends its usable life.
