Re - loving your coffee and your jolt cola, but can't conceive of it
being addictive - I have a couple of stories to tell you about this.
One is about a friend, Chris, who was raised by a codependent and
enabling mother who, after divorcing the Alcoholic Father, went on to
date another alcoholic for a long time - until he died. My friend was
in ACOA and Al-Anon some, but did not have any "normal addictions" such
as drugs, alcoholc, compulsive gambling, overeating, etc. But she did
drink copious amounts of coffee - so much so that at one time she was
mis-diagnosed as having a bipolar effective disorder. She would
frequently come to my house in the same state as a person on a speed
run would be, just from espresso - or however you spell it - and really
in bad shape wanting to talk to me in a sponsorly way and I would make
her up a tea using natural herbs that are relaxants. She'd drink it.
Then she'd pass out on my couch and when she'd wake up in a few hours,
she'd be fine. People sent me to her because I could handle her. A
few months later this young lady went off to college. The next time I
saw her she was a different person. Why? She had had to stop drinking
all forms of coffee and tea because she had nearly given herself an
ulcer at only 23 from it. To me, that is addictive use of a chemical.
Also my husband decided to give up coffee while we were engaged and he
was so grumpy and really off the walls that I almost called off the
engagement. His boss at that time was also ready to lay him off for a
month or two.
I'm not saying that YOU are addicted here, believe me. If you can
enjoy your coffee and jolt cola, go for it. But I have personally seen
at least these two cases where people were obviously taking use of
caffeine a little too seriously.
Although I don't touch the coffee and tea due to allergies - probably
to the tannic acid, as regular colas don't bother me (never had jolt) -
I got to be a bit of an expert on this in college. I took a mandatory
course in health on Drugs and society. I figured I'd Ace it as I was
in AA (sort of) myself and I'd also taken three other courses on
chemical dependency in the psychology dept. of my community (2 year)
school before it. In fact I figured I'd just re-submit the same term
papers on AA, Al-Anon, and NA. (I hadn't gotten the part about honesty
in all my endeavors just yet) The teacher fooled me and assigned me a
paper on caffeine as a drug. I was surprised to find some interesting
info on it.
