I'm running Lubuntu on my P4 systems - Lubuntu is Ubuntu with LXDE, a
lightweight window manager. Lubuntu runs in quite a bit less memory and the
install is quite a bit smaller than Ubuntu.

I have VirtualBox running on it, and have a cut down version of XP running
in a VM. I used XPLite to cut the OS down to the bare minimum. It runs in
about 70 megs.

I figure if I cut enough out of XP, it should be secure enough for
occasional use, even after the 2014 support end-date. It's a time machine of
sorts, anyways - I use it to run 16-bit DOS programs, like my DOS editor and
QWK reader.

And, as I get more comfortable with Linux on the desktop, I don't have the
same need to upgrade my hardware to keep up with Microsoft's revenue needs.
