Not totally unusually cold, but the size of the cold front is very rare.
The Russians have a lot of problems with their electric power as well, and
if this drags on for long it will be nasty in rural areas.

Not much ice, we had a long stretch of warm weather just before that. But
the sea is expected to freeze very quickly now, all the way through Estonia
is possible.

I don't have gas at all, just electricity - but I have these old (this is
an old house) fireplaces, one downstairs and one upstairs, which heat the
whole house pretty well, and I'm stacked with firewood, so heat is not a
problem. The problem will be water, because my plumbing will freeze if the
power goes out (the pipes underground have electric heating to keep them
open during the winter), and that won't be much fun.
