-> WC> I accidently hit on it one time but forget how I did it now.

-> DD mentioned "nmap":

-> Nmap is free port scanning software distributed by Insecure.Org
-> and designed to detect open ports on a target computer,

I never used that software.
I intuited something while playing around in Linux and tripped over
a undocumented command I seemingly used in an inappropriate way
that happened to work.
Then I redirected the output into a file rather than try to follow the
screen output.

I scanned verizon in this serendipitous discovery and it showed me
what ports were open there as well as identified them, Telnet, SMTP,
POP3, ect.

-> determine which services are running on those ports, and infer
-> which operating system the computer is running (this is also
-> known as fingerprinting). It has become one of the de-facto
-> tools in any network administrator's toolbox, and is used for
-> penetration testing and general computer security.
