We have laws here against assisted death, but I do like the aim - and
practice - of the hospices here (and, I hope, worldwide). Their goal is to
allow you to live the rest of your life with dignity. They consider pain
and incoherence to be undignified, not only is it painful for the patient
but it is distressing to their loved ones as well. So while they will not
overdose, they will select a drug regime that keeps the patient as lucid
and pain free as they want to be regardless of impact on life expectancy.
So while the debate rages over "put him out of his misery", there
is no disagreement over "at least give him something for the
pain."
