There was a recent stuff-up here, a super secret briefing paper from 1986
came to light amongst the papers of the late David Lange (ex PM). It went
into quite a lot of detail about who we were spying on and for whom the
intelligence was collected, and it appears that the US refusal to supply us
with intelligence info in retaliation for our nuclear free policy was only
a public front. One interesting point was the list of people we were spying
on, they were all of intense interest to the US and UK at the time.
Apparently they didn't want to be caught doing the spying themselves, so
used us so as to maintain a front of plausible deniability for themselves.
