True but they do have configuration files for windows. So windows knows
the settings and options available on that particular modem. The main
reason I want the right 'drivers' is so I may adjust my the volume of the
modem speaker in windows. The 'standard 28.8' does not allow me to do that.

I think you are under the wrong impression. I had a USR 14.4 previous to
this and if I chose the 'standard 14.4' option I would get maybe 1300-1400
transfer speeds...once I found out it was a USR and stored the 'optimal
configuration' in the modems memory (with terminate) I found I was getting
1400-1600 speeds--with fewer crc's. The init string can and does make a
HUGE difference. I have also learned this through experimenting with my
BBS init strings. The init string is crutial to maximizing your modem's
capabilities. I once used a Cardinal 14.4 that simply would not upload
anything...changed the init string and everything was fine...cps jumped
by 100 or so too. If you have a USR and windows detects it, then you are
right, there is nothing you can do to improve on it. When you don't know
the brand or what previous owners have stored in the memory--you would be
wise to check it out--that is what I am trying to do. But I don't know
how to figure out what brand it is--THAT is what I wanted to know.
Apparently you thought otherwise.
