Windows 7 x86 (32bit) can and will run DOS apps under the VDM schema
Windows has used since NT.

Windows XP/Vista/7 x64 (64 bit) cannot as you said, and would require an
3rd party emulator such as DOSBOX.

Conversely..

Windows 7 users Professional or Ultimate, regardless of being x86 or x64,
can run XP mode..
