In apartments, especially if you have corners that would work out well,
place the speakers in them, so that the low bass takes advantage of
being in a quarter space so that you may have more satisfying levels of
bass within the apartment without bothering the neighbors so much
through the walls because you need more speaker volumes.
As far as specific speaker suggestions, I'll pass on specific
recommendations for others to give. Theres so many available from bad to
excellent that it is too hard to keep track of (unless you are running
an audio magazine or something).
