I have a PROLINK Fax Data 14400 modem. Model 1414 LE It Has V.42 bis and
really looks great.  However, I can't get it to work properly at 14400 I am
presently booked on at 4800 and frequently only at 2400.  I bought it 2nd
hand with no books, hence no init strings.  

The problems are 1/ It handshakes but drops out before connection.        
2/ It connects but I get gibberish or
                 3/ It connects but stalls for a minute or so two or       
      three times on each screen.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it or do I need a new modem.
