>I exepcted people might think I was referring to "Neville".
That's why I included the passage in the first story about the Captain
reading from the dedication plaque and thinking of "Joshua
Lawrence". Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain would probably be known to
Starfleet=20 officers from studies of the battle of Gettysburg that=20 I'm
sure they'd be exposed to in courses on history,=20 military history, or
battle tactics at the Academy.
This of course assumes that the American Civil War is considered very
important in the global scheme of things. How much does the American Civil
War and the people and the battles matter to somebody who is not an
American? Looking at all the battles and wars in Earth's long history (not
to mention wars on other planets), the sheer number of individuals who
played a part in various wars is quite large. This would lead to a large
number of available names for ships, and the majority of the crew coming on
board for the first time would ask "who was this ship named for?"
Some might be aware of the American Civil War but to others, it might be
as obscure as the various wars that have decimated Paraguay (and once led
to legalized polygamy in an attempt to rebuild the population). I tend to
limit ship names to individuals whose contribution to history is such that
merely saying the name is enough. Of course, you can name your ships as
you see fit, but the U.S.S. Louis Riel is not coming to Steve-Trek anytime
soon.
>The strangest reaction to the name of the ship came=20
from my son who thought I had named the ship after "Wilt"
Chamberlain. That, I didn't expect. :)
I did think of Wilt Chamberlain too, but what other starships are named
after athletes (yes, I can see it now, the U.S.S. Michael Jordan or the
U.S.S. Wayne Gretzky).
