My Silverado has a 3000 mile 'change oil' light and that tells me it's
time to change the filter. I do that and add a quart of Mobil 1 and the
Silverado is good for another 3000 miles. I change the pan oil and
filter at 12k miles. In this hotter than normal area of the country, I use
10w/30...which is Chevrolet's recommended oil viscosity.
