In the Navy (and I expect in the other services as well) it depended on your rate/MOS. As a submarine QM in the 80's, I caught some fat re-enlistment bonuses because they were low on QMs. By my 16-year mark, they had just enough: no bonus, and also no early retirement. I would have had to re-enlist for four more years to get to the standard 20-year retirement; that entailed four years of sea duty, and I bailed. I was able to get discharged due to weight, and actually got 50% of the standard medical discharge "bonus". Then I took all the money I had saved from all those bonuses, and took in a movie .
