A GOOD UPS will protect equipment _beyond_ active operational periods.
_Constant_ series of high sequential line spikes, for example, can still
cause damages to power supplies even if the switch is "off" on the machine.
And, there have been reports of a UPS "taking it all" at such stressful times
as when lightning scores a direct hit. Better a UPS than the equipment
it's designed to protect...
