subject: echo creation, good grief

Hello Alan,

AI> I saw your posts in those echoes (ELIST and Z1_BACKBONE), looks like you
AI> have just about completed the process.. :)

I nearly missed the little paragraph about"The program will read the
message and update the EList database, then post a reply to the ELIST
conference"

First of all, that phrase/sentence would be better as a paragraph all by
itself. There is no mention on what to do next. There is no mention about
placing a copy of that message into Z1_BACKBONE. Then there is the word
"conference"; that tripped me up too, because I thought Fidonet
lingo was "echoes". I thought.. what is the conference? Is that
a sysop-only place?

Now, that it is done, yes it is doable. The netmail process to the robot
is good. The rules for the message format are ok. But I would bet that a
new sysop or just a user wanting to establish a new echo would FAIL.

AI> There are not many (if any) *EC in the net these days. There isn't really
AI> a need for them since nodes can connect directly to nodes anywhere in the
 AI> world.

Exactly. That is why Fidonet split into zones is irrelevant too. It
doesn't matter where one gets a feed. The network essentially relies on
cooperation anyway.

AI> I just had a look at filegate.net/echolist and there are many echolists
AI> in there. It'd take a good day or two of digging and I'm not sure if
AI> there is anything in there to dig for.

Do you mean the list of files ELSTnnnn.ZIP ?

If so, yes that would be a bit of work to download all of them and search
for a string *within a file within a file* within each archive.

My Boss node does not allow rescans of STATS echo (where I assume some
clues for the previous FUTURE4FIDO might be found.) But I *can* pull the
content via the NNTP option and get the messages going back to 2010. I'd
like to solve the mystery. Call me nuts.
