Regarding 2400 baud being the max for a landline.
Well the definition of Baud is not exactly the same as bits per
second.
A 28,800 b.p.s. is actually using a much lower baud rate to talk
to the other modem but due to quadrature (phase encoding) you get
multiple bits per baud.
Yeah, it took me a while to get used to this too. I forget the
actual baud rate a v.34 modem uses but it is surprisingly low.
But that phase encoding sure cranks up the bits!
