JANE KELLEY was thinking about A fact or two.... and keyed into
cyberspace:
JK>MP>Well, the CDC has mentioned that they see the possibility of
JK>MP>eliminating environmentally caused polio in the US in the next
JK>MP>5-10 years. Sixty years to eradicate such a disease.
JK>Vacines can be made from either dead or what is called "attenuated"
JK>organisms...those which are very weak. Just after the vacine for TB
JK>was marketed, a batch got through which wasn't as weak as it should
JK>have been. For that reason, the public sentiment against the vaccine
JK>has kept many from getting it. The BIA provides it to Native
JK>Americans and has just done wonders in the statistics on that disease
JK>among that population group.
JK>Just after the Salk vaccine was marketed, a similar incident arose.
JK>Some very healthy bugs got loose. However, the press covered the
JK>story well, the problem was solved, and the vacinations continued.
JK>MP>My youngest son, and you know his situation, has a classmate whose
JK>MP>is a foster child. The child's birth "parents" failed to have the
JK>MP>child immunized against polio because they believed the whacko
JK>MP>conspiracy nuts about the CDC, AMA, FDA, etc. The child cannot
JK>MP>walk. A tragic impact on such a small life.
JK>I have seen children such as this, worked with polio along side the
JK>Kenney nurses at Gallinger Hospital in Washington when I was a
JK>student. One shift I looked down to see a student nurse from another
JK>hospital who I knew, in fact I had double dated with her just a few
JK>months prior to this when she was at my own hospital!
JK>That is a very nasty feeling; to see someone unable to walk or move
JK>around who you saw dancing and having a good time not too long
JK>beforehand. She had the type of polio that caused temporary
JK>paralysis, thank heaven, and recovered well enough to continue her
JK>studies.
JK>I forget her name today. One more person who I traveled the same
JK>path with,briefly, a long time ago.
JK>It isn't enough to have the vaccines. They must be properly made and
JK>handled to be effective and safe.
JK>I would encourage parents to find out what that means and also what
JK>procedures are used in their own doctor's offices. Who checks the
JK>frig to make certain it is clean and the temperature is correct? How
JK>often?
JK>And who checks for the expiration date of the vaccine itself?
JK>These aren't alternative medicine but they are in the area of
JK>assuming personal responsiblity for health care which should go along
JK>with any discussion about any kind of medicine.
Well, Jane, it is nice to find an area where we agree. I am a pretty
good judge of temperature, usually off by a degree or two at most. So,
when my kids received their vaccinations, I did the checking.
Their pediatrician did not mind, and, in fact, encourages it. He shows
the vial to the parents just to let them know that he takes pride in his
work.
