| subject: | Banksia 33.6k Upgrade |
Hi, haven't posted here for a while. Well I went and did it. Upgraded
my Banksia Myfast-v34 to v34bis (33.6k). So far my feelings are
mixed, I have done little testing but I've run into one problem
already, Alphamed Link, a bbs here in Sydney, that has two USR
Courier's online, is givin me the brush off ;) Cannot seem to stay on
it for very long. But I am working on it. I've read a few messages
here about eprom revisions, I do have the 1510 release inside the
modem. One thing I think the problem might be is that David (Sysop) is
running an old SDL that might not fully support v34bis and only the
propietary USR protocol (same thing?!). When typing in \N0 before
calling, everything seems fine, I established a 31200/28800 connect
but no error correction/compression is a bit of a worry. Anyway I
am working on it.
The upgrade cost me $99 quite steep, but considering i've had the
modem for a long time and that i've had the eeprom upgraded at least
four times before this and that the modem was fully replaced once
due to a repair error, I see this as insurance, it extends the
warranty. All up the modem has cost me $600 now, which is pretty
good considering i've had the modem since I think june last year.
Well for anyone who is interested here are the ati responses:
ATI0
Banksia MyFastV34 336 Fax Modem Rev 34151SA1
ATI3
V1.510-V34_DS
ATI6
RC288DPi Rev 05BA
Also, sorry to disappoint some fellow Rockwell-Based 33.6k owners,
from what I can tell this firmware doesn't support the 64 state
trellis coding that the courier supports, I come to this conclusion
because when running USR stat on alphamed's maximus setup it still
stated that my end was doing 16 state coding, but I was running
with \N0. However on a more positive note, it does appear to support
(yes maybe even initiate) split speeds. Apparently this firmware also
supports "disticive ring" not that I know what that means or how
to use it as I was given no extra docs.
Maybe someone could tell me if there are any extra commands added in
this firmware. Anyone who has maybe a upgraded spirit viper/cobra can
try calling alphamed link, these are the two numbers. Let us know
what happens.
