Honestly, from your description, it sounds like a file permissions issue.

Do an 'ls -l' on the file and see who it belongs to.

Output should look something like this:
-rw-r--r--  1 gandalf gandalf       1359 Jul 29 21:18  slack

If your username isn't shown in the first owner's field, change
ownership to you using the 'chown' command.

Hopefully you can make some progress with this.
