I've tried to do that on my own BBS but it's hard. I still have an urge to
connect the 80XXX echo but I know there has been no traffic in years.

Go ahead and connect whatever areas you like, or disconnect areas you don't
want/need.

Echoes come and go so you just need to choose.

Over the years my own BBS has carried the areas I wanted and a few that
users requested although I haven't had a user request in a very long time.

Right, there must be 10 or more sysops for every user today. It was the
reverse when I first joined Fidonet.
