Now given the efficiency of modern Russian aam's you'd probably not want to get close enough for visual confirmation. Were you in more of a patrol oriented mission e.g. pottering in the vicinity of NYC then you'd put a man in the loop anyway & even then you'd actually as now have many men in the loop e.g. check back to see it was OK to down a 777 full of passengers as that's not a pilot's decision alone.
