The technology is already deployed in Iraq. Google for "Global Hawk".

For an interesting novel that describes a near-future global conflict where
unmanned autonomous weapons systems with human oversight via satellite
links are the norm, look for "Cold Allies" by Patricia Anthony.
It was published in 1993, so some of the future technology described in it
is available today.
