Why I noticed this subthread in the first place: New Zealand is an
attractive place for foreigners to buy property, so as to have somewhere to
bolt to if the world situation deteriorates. Some rural / wilderness
properties are too large and have too high a price for most NZers to
afford, so are naturals for overseas ownership. This has caused
considerable public unease about the increasing amount of foreign
ownership. For example, Shania Twain recently bought a huge high country
sheep station and had to comply with several caveats regarding public
access to the wilderness areas behind the property, and to develop the
property so as not to negatively impact the scenic impact. To her credit
she shows every indication of becoming a model citizen, unlike the
behaviour of some earlier purchasers which led to the new laws being
drafted.
