 Well, all the strings work, but if the line is not clear enough for the 
speed  you've chosen, it'll drop back every 2400 until it's good enough.  For 
some  reason, if you put the string AT N0 S37=19 and try to connect to a 14.4 
modem, it'll not connect, after all the different sounds, it'll say NO 
CARRIER.
