Most likely the mechanic kept the new ones for his own use.  That said, the
two rear spark plugs are a bear to change -- almost impossible from the
top, so I changed mine underneath.  Anyway, we discouraged that sort of
thing, but it still happens because of greed and laziness.  It's unusual
for a mechanic to get away with something like that because the car may not
have idled or performed well and had he been caught by the service manager,
he would have been fired.

I have a video somewhere of a guy with a Japanese vehicle powered by an
array of batteries with an expensive controller of some sort racing a 1/4
mile against a Corvette and winning.  It was practically no contest off the
line.
