subject: Comment re: Screening at birth

You've just given birth to a brand new baby, maybe your first.
Congratulations!
Are the congenial doctors, the nursing staff, and virtually everyone
else involved in your hospital visit "assessing" or screening you for
"at-risk indicators" suggestive of possible child abuse or neglect?
Was the nurse that you recall having enjoyed a "relaxed" conversation
with actually just following written instructions, noting your
replies, attitudes, and behaviors toward your newborn child, all the
while recording her "assessments" of you as a potential parent?
That funny feeling you had about one nurse in particular, almost as if
she was probing for something, as she asked you all of those leading
questions. You can't quite put your finger on what it was that made
you uneasy about her, but you shake off the feeling wondering if it is
best attributed to postpartum paranoia.
You forget the funny feeling, as your baby is wheeled into your room
from the nursery. Somewhat later, and quite unexpectedly, a social
worker from the local Child Protective Services unit appears in your
room. . .
A close-up look at the screening process, such as it exists today in
most hospitals.
