Recent research points in the direction that this problem is even worse
than previously expected. The lower rate of growth associated with
antibiotic resistant bacteria was a hopeful sign that if antibiotic use was
cut back (stop feeding it to animals; can we continue to be this stupid? I
guess so) then perhaps the prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria
would go down. However, the reduced growth rate is only temporary. New
types of resistance are detrimental to growth rate. But once the bacteria
have been resistant for a while they begin to growth as fast as their
brethren that do not possess resistance.
