Howdy All!!
Just wondering if any of you are using a Behaviour Modification system using
tokens/chips/coins etc? How well has this worked? What kinds of problems
have you found?
We just started Jeremy on one this week and although it's only been three
days now, it seems to be going well. I'm just trying to figure out what
methods you use and what rewards your kids can "cash" in for etc.
We are using poker chips with different values. He has specific chores to
do during the day which earn him set points and a few bonus points available
as well. Both the school and day care have agreed to come up with one or
two things that he is expected to do as well and we will add these to his
list. The teachers at school and day care have enthusiastically agreed to
using a communications book with us every day so we are very excited about
how well this might work.
He also has a list of behaviours which "cost" him points. Temper Tantrums,
screaming, rudeness etc. As he accumulates the points, he can redeem them
for different things/activities. We are just working through the various
items which he can redeem for.
Basically, Jeremy's current "Responsibilities" are as follows.
Morning chores (must be completed within 15 minutes)
Value: 5 points
Wash face & hands
Brush teeth
Brush Hair
Get dressed
Picking up mail at the mail box
Value: 1 Point mail
Bringing Lunch box to kitchen from car
Value: 1 Point
Setting the table *OR* doing homework
Value: 5 Points
Bedtime Chores (same as morning ones)
There are a few bonus ones as well but let's not do all those :-)
Right now, we are figuring out what events/items to use for "cashing in".
So far, we are thinking about stuff like time on Nintendo or TV (Which is
*HIGHLY* restricted anyway), trips to the dollar store, outings Jeremy can
choose, etc. This (for me at least) is proving the hardest to think of.
I have done up a chart on the computer and we give Jeremy the poker chips as
soon as possible after he fulfills his responsibility.
Looking forward to hearing from y'all.
Take Care & God Bless!!
