You would be surprised.  Kids learn about hot trrendy books via  
their social media!  LOL

Consistent sellers are manga graphic novels (the ones you read  
back to front), Captain Underpants, Bad Guys, Dog Man, Wimpy  
Kid, Dork Diaries, The Princess in Black, Diary of an 8-Bit  
Warrior, the book series by Rick Riordan, the different series  
by Sarah Maas, and Cinda Williams Chima, and Victoria Aveyard,  
and Casandra Clare.

There is super hot series right now called Shadow & Bone by  
Leigh Bardugo (now adapted for Netflix); I never seem to have  
enough before I run out.  The Harry Potter series are a staple;  
they are always summertime and wintertime favourites.

There are quite a few other authors, too numerous to remember  
off the top of my head.

When there is an adaptation to a tv series, many people want to  
get a head start (or get "more to the story") and read the  
books.
