NEWS
At United Solar Ovonic, which makes high-tech batteries and solar panels,
Bush toured the plant with the company's president, Subhendu Guha.
Speaking to the media after the tour, Bush said the company has helped make
solar technology commercially viable by producing long rolls of solar
panels that are more user-friendly than older versions. He predicted that
someday, consumers will become electric producers in their homes --
powering not only their own houses but feeding electricity back into the
local power grid.
"This is going to change the way we live in our homes," Bush said.
Earlier in the day, Bush toured a Johnson Controls Inc. center in Milwaukee
where that company is researching smaller, longer-lasting batteries for
automobiles. Following his trip to metro Detroit, Bush was headed to
Colorado to discuss the need for more research into ethanol fuels.
The president has said the nation must break its "addiction to foreign
oil."
Bush, in his Advanced Energy Initiative, set a national goal of replacing
more than 75% of oil imports from the Middle East by 2025, and his proposed
budget would provide $289 million -- an increase of $53 million over the
current year -- to accelerate the development of hydrogen fuel cells and
affordable hydrogen-powered cars.
