Hi Hamish, HM>Some of us are opposed to USRs on religious grounds. It think Lewin HM>might join me on that one. :-) (oh no, please, don't start Lewin on this religous crusade :-) HM>Besides (a little different I know) not all USRs are terrific; I had a HM>Sportster 14400 internal for a while and I have to say, the external HM>Maestro 144FM (metal case) I had before it was a much better modem. Currently have 5 modems here, some used every day, 24hrs a day, others that sit in thier boxes as backup units.... 1) 14.4k Oz Sportster - not bad, seems pretty reliable, maintains good connections, even on terrible lines (not used on the BBS these days) 2) 14.4k Maestro 144FM - never been an ounce of trouble since day 1, doesn't handle sus lines as well as the Sportster tho (used on line 1 of my BBS) 3) Interlink 12k - I don't care what else you have heard about Interlink modems, this 12345 model was/is great. Handled some pretty sus lines without a problem. Its' only problem is that its max speed is 12k (not used on the BBS these days) 4) Courier V.34+ - Nice modem (so far) bought it a few weeks back, have not yet played with init strings, handles some pretty lousy lines with ease (international calls, both inbound & outbound (currently used on Line 2 of my BBS) 5) Supra 288 - (sob) I liked my Supra Faxmodem, gee it was good, never complained, would handle the worst lines without a complaint, nice little allow one piece case, nice little display for connection speed, error correction ect. The only non austel approved modem I have owned (not used - a little to much electricity got to it :( The other modem I have used was a 2400 Netcomm, was a good modem, never had a problem with it until it took a little to much spark one day which killed it :) cya later, Paul. ... It compiled? The first screen came up?
