Great series. I've read 3 or 4 of them--everything but the most recent one.
Great fun and yes, a relatively painless way to learn some history.
The historical mysteries are becoming quite popular in the past decade or
so. The "Brother Cadfael" series is a great favorite of
mine--unfortunately, Ellis Peters died recently--she will be missed. I also
enjoy the Anne Perry "Inspector Monk" Victorian mysteries--perhaps it should
be "Private Investigator Monk" now.
The Judge Dee mysteries are also interesting--although I'm uncertain as to
their authorship. I'm not sure whether they were all written by Van Gulik
in the 20th century, or were Chinese tales which he translated, or are a
combination of the two--some he translated and some he wrote himself.
