TENS OF THOUSANDS WANT HAYES $99 56K MODEM UPGRADE
       ----------------------------------------------------------
Thousands of U.S. Robotics Customers Inquire on Hayes Web Site
Atlanta, GA, March 12 1997 - An unprecedented 50,000 plus modem
users have visited Hayes Web site in response to Hayes US$99 56K modem
upgrade for any modem at any speed from any vendor. More than a third
of the trade-in inquiries are from current owners of U.S. Robotics
modems.
"We thought that many modem users would respond to our $99 offer, but
this is far better than we had expected," said Joseph Formichelli,
President and CEO, Hayes Microcomputer Products, Inc. "It's a great
opportunity for modem users who want to experience the high-quality
performance and speed of K56Flex technology in Hayes modems and it's
good timing for Hayes to expand our retail presence. Hayes went back in
the black in 1996 and we're gearing up to go public."
Hayes announced US$99 56 kbps modem upgrades for any modem on
the market earlier this year. The company plans to ship its first 56
kbps modems on March 23, 1997. Hayes customers who purchase a Hayes
33.6 kbps or 28.8 kbps modem between February 1, 1997 and April 15, 1997
can redeem a free 56 kbps modem upgrade. Hayes customers with any Hayes
modem qualify for a discounted $89 upgrade to 56K.
All upgrades must be claimed via registration by June 30, 1997 to
qualify for these special upgrade programs. Timing of availability may
vary from product-to-product, so users should call Hayes Customer
Support at (770)441-1617 or check the Hayes Web site at www.hayes.com
for timing on 56K upgrade availability for their particular kind of
Hayes modem and for authorization to return a product for 56K trade-in.
A $15 shipping an handling fee will be charged for all 56K Hayes
customer and competitive upgrades.
Hayes 56K modems use K56Flex technology - the protocol supported
by Lucent Technologies and Rockwell International. According to sources
at Dataquest, almost two-thirds of the remote access servers used by
ISPs and corporations have committed to support the K56Flex protocol.
Details of Hayes 56K upgrade policy are posted on Hayes Web Site at
www.hayes.com. Hayes customers will be upgraded to the same Hayes
ACCURA or OPTIMA brand of modem that they originally purchased. Users
may upgrade from standard data/fax products to voice and PC Card
products. Pricing details are available on Hayes Web site. All upgrades
are subject to product availability.
Hayes high-speed 56 kbps modems essentially double the speed of
downloading information from the Internet. Making the leap to 56 kbps
is different from past speed increases because the modem is taking
advantage of the high-speed, digital connection to the telephone network
that Internet service providers and corporations already have.
Hayes is working closely with Lucent Technologies, Rockwell
International, the International Telecommunications Union and other
modem manufacturers to ensure that 56 kbps products are compatible with
other leading products on the market until 56 kbps becomes a worldwide
standard.
Based in Norcross, Georgia, Hayes markets its ULTRA, ACCURA, OPTIMA,
Practical Peripherals and CENTURY brands of modems, remote access
servers, and terminal adapters along with Smartcom communications
software worldwide. Hayes introduced the PC modem in 1981. Today, with
distributors in more than 45 countries, it is one of the largest
manufacturers of modems in the world. For more information about Hayes
