A number of JBL and similar compression drivers are rated in the mid 140 dB
range for 1 W drive. That translates into 161-168 dBspl for maximum input
power. Such measurements are based on 1" tube loading, not real world use,
and are intended as useful specs for comparing drivers separately from horns
or other loading. Need some rather heavy headphones with lousy low end
response, but that can cut through crowd noise?
The B&K mics NASA uses on launch pads can supposedly handle around 180 dBspl
before overload.
