Nobody bothers mentioning the Courier's excellent security features, but
I'd suggest that for those who need them, as well as the ease with which
EPROM upgrades can be performed, an extra $100 is not too much to pay. 
I'll avoid mentioning the Courier's support for H16 and V32t, as these are
essentially dead protocols these days.  It's probably also worth pointing
out that my first V.32bis modem cost me over A$1000 (as presumably, did
yours), so $400 for a Courier sounds fairly trivial in comparison.
