subject: FLASH UP AND DOWN

AA>What is the significance of needing separate utilities to flash "UP"
AA>and "DOWN":
AA> README.TXT 9 July 1996 rev. ALJ
AA> TWO V34 Flasher Utility program for DOS.
AA> FL_1XXUP.EXE (flashes up from older versions)
AA> FL_1XXDN.EXE (flasher DOWN from newer versions)
AA>I thought code is code. Bits are bits. How does the modem care
AA>whether the version change is going to older code or upgrading to
AA>newer code?
Well its due to a programming oddity.
The Version 2.xx flasher utility can't handle
flashing 1.440-09 or later (33.6k) ROM code modems.
The Version 3.xx flasher utility can't handle
flashing 1.200-09 or earlier ROM code modems.
So depending on wether you're going up to the 1.300-13
code or down from a 1.300-13 you'll need one or the other.
